Laborie Wines

In 1691, Laborie was granted to French Huguenot, Isaac Taillefert. Already the owner of the neighbouring Picardie, Taillefert placed Laborie in his son Jean’s name. Together, they set about clearing the bush and planting vines, and within seven years, were producing a drinkable wine.

In fact, it was the opinion of a Frenchman, Leguat, who visited the Cape in 1698.  He quipped that their wine was “the best in the colony and similar to our small wines of Champagne”.

With their knowledge of French viticultural techniques, the Taillefert family laid a solid foundation of vineyards and outstanding wine production. Over three hundred years later, this is evident in Laborie’s wines of distinction.

Laborie Estate is a historic, working farm at the foothills of Paarl Mountain, less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town. This spectacular estate has been revived as a vibrant destination in the Cape Winelands and is host to stylish, family-friendly restaurants, picnics and an artisanal food market. Guests can enjoy wine tasting with some of the most breath-taking views in the Boland and spend the night in one of our luxury guestrooms, set amongst the vineyards.
