KWV’s outstanding performance in the Tim Atkin 2023 South Africa Report highlights a tradition of excellence

KWV, a cornerstone of South African winemaking, has once again demonstrated its exceptional prowess in the prestigious Tim Atkin 2023 South Africa Report. In his latest report, this British Master of Wine (MW) underscores KWV’s continued commitment to producing top-tier wines, as evidenced by a range of high scores awarded to its wines. This accomplishment follows KWV’s Chief Viticulturist, Marco Ventrella, being honoured as the Best Viticulturist in the 2021 report and the consistent recognition of its wines.

2023 Vintage Report: KWV

Water is the key feature of this vintage. Its lack to begin with and its abundance at the end with a few key cameo performances in between. Simply put we began this vintage with a very dry winter indeed. Our winter rains are the main source of moisture for our soils in the Western Cape and particularly in the Coastal regions.

A SINGLE SOUTH AFRICAN WINE CELLAR SECURES A TROPHY AT CONCOURS MONDIAL 2021

KWV is “blown away” after just being named the producer of the best wine in the South African category in the international, 28th Concours Mondial de Bruxelles competition. The Mentors Perold 2018, a premium Cape red blend, was the only South African wine to take home a Grand Gold as well as a Revelations Trophy – only awarded to the best of the best wines in the competition. It also took home a Silver Medal for its Roodeberg Rosé 2020, and in doing so, was the highest rated still rosé from South Africa.

2021 HARVEST BEGINNING AND SEASON TRENDS TO DATE.

To sit and reflect, at this time every year, on the season behind and project into the future for vintage, is normally a jovial fool’s errand with perhaps 50/50 success, but fun none the less. This year is a very, very different animal. From lockdown immediately after harvest 2020, alcohol bans, COVID19 through the year to date. So many words, key words, touchstone words, trigger words, a multitude of words with immediate visceral impacts on us all. Lockdown, Sanitise, Isolation, Curfew, travel restriction, zoom meetings, working from home, mute button failures, Spouses/kids/pets fails on video meetings, toilet paper shortages, mask, testing, sick, infected, hospitalised, public health care system and increasingly now on a planetary scale: Condolences.

EYES TO THE SKY, FEET ON THE GROUND: KWV HUMBLED BY RECEIVING VERITAS VERTEX AND TOP ACHIEVING CELLAR AWARDS

“It is such a big honour; I am almost at a loss for words.” This was what an elated Izele van Blerk, The Mentors winemaker at KWV, said when it was announced that her team had secured the coveted Veritas Vertex Award for The Mentors Orchestra 2018 at the annual Veritas Awards this weekend. This spectacular Bordeaux-style red blend is the first red wine to be announced as this competition’s overall champion wine, from almost 1 300 entries received In a momentous conclusion to a particularly challenging year, the Veritas Wine Awards also announced KWV as the country’s top achieving cellar.
