Celebration fires are burning high at KWV following another incredible performance in a global wine competition, this time at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2021 (DWWA). KWV is “blown away” after just being named the producer of the best wine in the South African category in the international, 28th Concours Mondial de Bruxelles competition. The Mentors Perold 2018, a premium Cape red blend, was the only South African wine to take home a Grand Gold as well as a Revelations Trophy – only awarded to the best of the best wines in the competition. It also took home a Silver Medal for its Roodeberg Rosé 2020, and in doing so, was the highest rated still rosé from South Africa.
To sit and reflect, at this time every year, on the season behind and project into the future for vintage, is normally a jovial fool’s errand with perhaps 50/50 success, but fun none the less. This year is a very, very different animal. From lockdown immediately after harvest 2020, alcohol bans, COVID19 through the year to date. So many words, key words, touchstone words, trigger words, a multitude of words with immediate visceral impacts on us all. Lockdown, Sanitise, Isolation, Curfew, travel restriction, zoom meetings, working from home, mute button failures, Spouses/kids/pets fails on video meetings, toilet paper shortages, mask, testing, sick, infected, hospitalised, public health care system and increasingly now on a planetary scale: Condolences.
“It is such a big honour; I am almost at a loss for words.” This was what an elated Izele van Blerk, The Mentors winemaker at KWV, said when it was announced that her team had secured the coveted Veritas Vertex Award for The Mentors Orchestra 2018 at the annual Veritas Awards this weekend. This spectacular Bordeaux-style red blend is the first red wine to be announced as this competition’s overall champion wine, from almost 1 300 entries received In a momentous conclusion to a particularly challenging year, the Veritas Wine Awards also announced KWV as the country’s top achieving cellar.
