KWV RINGS IN THE FESTIVE SEASON WITH VERITAS GLITTER

14 October 2019

Cape Town, 14 October 2019 – KWV is exceptionally proud to announce that its winemaking and distilling teams featured amongst the top performers at the annual Veritas Wine Awards gala dinner on Friday, 11 October. Collectively, its wines and spirits received no less than nine Golds and eight Double Golds from this prestigious wine competition.

The Veritas Awards, now in its 29th year, is the longest running wine and brandy competition in South Africa and is considered one of the most authoritative benchmarks for market-ready wines in the country. Entries are judged by South Africa’s top wine judges and critics with international wine judges included on some panels. Veritas is largely driven by consumer preferences, with judges valuing drinkability, wine structure and maturing ability when scrutinising wines. The selection process for Double Gold winners is especially rigorous.

Highlighting KWV’s long-established reputation of making quality wine, this wine and spirits company made history when it collected a Double Gold for the oldest wine in South Africa, the KWV Muscadel 1930. This ‘old dame’ was flanked with Double Golds for some other mature vintages, including the KWV Ruby Port 1949, KWV Tawny Port Limited Release 1948 and KWV Hanepoot Jerepigo 1969. Indicating that the tradition of making fine wine and spirits has prevailed throughout a century, KWV was also awarded Double Gold for the KWV Classic Collection Cape Tawny (NV), Abraham Perold Tributum 2012, its KWV 12 Year Small Barrels Potstill Brandy and its KWV 20 Year Potstill Brandy.

KWV received scores of 90 to 92 out of 100, and associated Gold medals, for the following wines:

  • The Mentors Chenin Blanc 2017
  • Laborie Blanc de Blancs MCC 2014
  • Abraham Perold Tributum 2014
  • The Mentors Canvas Coastal Region 2017
  • The Mentors Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
  • The Mentors Pinotage Coastal Region 2017
  • The Mentors Sauvignon Blanc / Sémillon (Darling) 2013
  • The Mentors Sémillon (Lutzville) 2012
  • KWV 15 Year Alambic Potstill Brandy

“The assortment of Veritas medals accumulated by KWV indicates the consistent quality of the wines in our portfolio,” said KWV Cellar Master Wim Truter. Master Distiller, Pieter de Bod, shared his joy: “We are extremely pleased that the value and quality of KWV Brandy impressed judges at this year’s Veritas Awards.”

Reflecting on the company’s performance, CEO Boyce Lloyd said: “We know the South African industry is making some of the best wines in history and for KWV to be recognised in this manner is indeed a very proud moment. We take great pleasure in sharing this news with our consumers, who we know will value our commitment to quality when pouring our wines and spirits at their festive tables this season.”
