Echoes of the Rhône
A journey through varietal expression, blending harmony, and Rhône-inspired wines shaped by South African terroir
The Rhône Valley is one of the world’s most storied wine regions — stretching through France from the cool, granite slopes of the Northern Rhône to the sun-drenched, wind-shaped landscapes of the South. It is a place defined by contrast: elegance and power, restraint and generosity, structure and abundance.
Yet beyond geography, the Rhône is best understood as a philosophy of wine — one that celebrates both purity of expression and the art of blending.
This edition invites you to explore the varietals that have come to define Rhône-style winemaking, alongside South African interpretations shaped by our own unique landscapes and winemaking traditions.
At the heart of the Rhône’s identity are its signature grape varieties, each bringing a distinct voice to the blend. Syrah delivers structure, dark fruit, and savoury spice. Grenache offers warmth, generosity, and vibrant red berry fruit. Mourvèdre contributes earthy depth and longevity, while Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne bring aromatic lift, texture, and complexity to white wines.
In the Rhône, these grapes are rarely experienced in isolation. They are blended with intention — balanced, layered, and greater than the sum of their parts.
South Africa has become a natural second home for Rhône varietals. Our warm climate, diverse soils, and cooling maritime influences mirror many of the conditions that allow these grapes to thrive in France. Here, they take on a new identity — one that is both familiar and unmistakably South African.
This edition explores both sides of the Rhône philosophy: the clarity of single varietals and the complexity of Rhône-inspired blends. Together, they form a conversation across regions, soils, and styles. Welcome to Echoes of the Rhône — a celebration of expression, harmony, and the enduring art of blending.
THE SIGNATURE VARIETALS OF THE RHÔNE
SYRAH (SHIRAZ)
The cornerstone of Rhône winemaking. Expect dark fruit, black pepper, violets, and savoury spice supported by firm structure and depth. In South Africa, Shiraz often shows richness balanced by freshness and elegant spice.
GRENACHE
Generous and fruit-driven, Grenache brings warmth, softness, and vibrant red berry character. It contributes approachability, balance, and lifted fruit expression to Rhône-style blends.
MOURVÈDRE
Earthy, structured, and complex. Mourvèdre adds savoury depth, tannin structure, and ageing potential, often revealing notes of dark fruit, herbs, and spice.
VIOGNIER
Aromatic and expressive, known for floral perfume and luscious stone fruit flavours.
Viognier contributes elegance, fragrance, and texture.
MARSANNE & ROUSSANNE
Textural white Rhône varietals offering richness, minerality, and subtle complexity.
Together, they create layered wines with freshness and depth.
THE ART OF RHÔNE BLENDING
At the heart of Rhône winemaking lies blending — not as correction, but as composition.
Classic combinations such as Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre (GSM) create wines of harmony and dimension,
where fruit, spice, structure, and earth work together seamlessly.
By tasting both varietal wines and Rhône-inspired blends, this edition offers insight into how winemakers
shape balance, complexity, and expression through thoughtful blending.
